Certified Expert Witness Specialist

Course Description

The Certified Expert Witness Specialist (CEWS™) course is designed to provide
professionals with a practical introduction to the field of expert witness consulting and
testimony. Many highly qualified professionals possess years of technical, scientific,
engineering, healthcare, safety, environmental, construction, financial, or management
experience but have never received formal training on how to effectively apply that
knowledge in legal proceedings.
This course provides participants with an understanding of the expert witness process
from initial retention through testimony. Students will learn how courts utilize experts,
what attorneys expect from experts, how to evaluate evidence, how to communicate
technical information to non-technical audiences, and how to avoid common mistakes
that can damage credibility.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of these modules, participants will be able to:
Explain how jurors evaluate and rely upon expert witness testimony during trials.
Identify factors that increase or decrease expert witness credibility.
Communicate technical opinions in a manner understandable to judges and
juries.
Explain the differences between the Frye and Daubert standards.
Understand the legal requirements for admissibility of expert testimony.
Develop expert opinions that are based upon reliable methodologies and
accepted professional practices.
Recognize challenges that may be raised against expert testimony.
Prepare testimony and reports that can withstand judicial scrutiny.

Requirements / Prerequisites

Bachelor's degree in engineering, chemistry or physics OR a bachelor’s degree in a
closely related biological or physical science from an accredited college or university.
Three (3) years of acceptable work experience may be substituted for each year of
an academic degree program (i.e. Twelve years of experience is equivalent to a
bachelor’s degree).
