Course Description

Expert witnesses play a critical role in the legal system by helping judges,
juries, attorneys, arbitrators, and mediators understand complex technical,
scientific, engineering, safety, health, environmental, and occupational
issues. The effectiveness of an expert witness depends not only on
technical knowledge and experience but also on the ability to conduct
thorough investigations, prepare defensible reports, communicate

effectively, withstand cross-examination, and maintain the highest ethical
standards.
This course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and
skills necessary to become effective consulting and testifying experts.
Students will learn the legal foundations governing expert testimony,
methods for conducting investigations, techniques for writing defensible
reports, deposition and courtroom presentation skills, ethics, effective
communication strategies, and business practices necessary for
developing a successful expert witness practice.

Requirements / Prerequisites

Bachelor's degree in engineering, chemistry or physics OR a bachelor’s
degree in a closely related biological or physical science from an
accredited college or university. Three (3) years of acceptable work
experience may be substituted for each year of an academic degree
program (i.e. Twelve years of experience is equivalent to a bachelor’s
degree).
